Or ‘Furious 6’ as it is officially titled, stars series regular Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker as part of the team driving fast cars and living the high life. This high-octane action defies the laws of probability and gravity once more.

5. Before Midnight

Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke reprise the beloved roles of Celine and Jesse for the third instalment of Richard Linklater’s ‘Before’ trilogy. Heart-warming and heart-breaking in equal measure, you don’t need to have seen the other two films to enjoy this one.

4. Captain Phillips

This probable Oscar contender stars Tom Hanks as the captain of the title, trying to keep him and his crew safe after their vessel is boarded by Somali pirates. Director Paul Greengrass keeps the tension ratcheted up with his usual visual style.

1. Gravity

Thrilling audiences all over the world, this outer space nail-biter stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney as two astronauts facing disaster after a debris cloud disturbs a USA mission and sends Bullock spinning off into space.

2. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The second instalment in Peter Jackson’s trilogy hit UK cinemas just in time for Christmas. Martin Freeman’s Bilbo Baggins comes up against the dragon Smaug (voiced by Freeman’s Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch).

3. Les Misérables

The epic musical was released in film form this year, starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried as the various cast members trying to survive in pre-rebellion France. The sweeping visuals and well-known songs make this one to watch.
